The city around them
Pickering has about 100,000 residents and sits on Lake Ontario at the western edge of Durham Region. A GO Train from Pickering GO reaches downtown Toronto in about half an hour, the 401 and the 407 both run through the city, and Pickering Town Centre, Frenchman’s Bay and the Nautical Village anchor daily life. North of the 407, the large Seaton community is being built.
Because it is the first Durham town east of Toronto, Pickering usually prices a step above Ajax. The highest prices are on detached homes in the established west end and the older lakeside pockets, while a condo or townhome near the Town Centre costs less and suits first-time buyers and downsizers who want to stay near transit.
The west end, where Rougemount, Amberlea and Highbush sit, is the family side of the city, close to Petticoat Creek and the Rouge. Bay Ridges and Frenchman’s Bay are the lake side, and West Shore is the quiet lakeside pocket just west of the bay.
